To play with Berry, you better B. Goode
Chuck Berry has achieved two giant reputations since marking his commencement stumble, “Maybellene,” in 1955:
He’s the to the highest degree influential rock candy ’n’ curler in euphony chronicle.
And, quite peradventure, the almost difficult.
Now 81, the begetter of rock comes to Hub of the Universe for a rare date on Dominicus at Berklee Public presentation Centre. It’s a benefit for Arlington’s Right Turn, ex-Del Fuegos drummer Woody Giessmann’s treatment center for creative artists in convalescence.
To back Berry, a 15-piece band of stellar sidemen - including Red River Hot Chilli Pepper Republic of Chad Smith, Boston’s Barry Goudreau, Wheeling Stones saxophonist Tim Ries and ex-Doobie Brothers guitar player Jeff “Skunk” Baxter - has been assembled by Herb Simon Kirke, former drummer of Free and Badly Troupe. Most have played with Charles Edward Berry at least once earlier, and they’re both excited and nervous about repetition the go through.
Berry only whole kit with pickup bands. He arrives with no baggage demur his red Gibson guitar and an attache subject to stuff with his pay, which he collects in john Cash before apiece concert.
Typically arriving mere transactions in front commencement, he ne'er rehearses. He even refuses to tell his musicians what song he’s about to play or what francis Scott Key it’s in.
“When you ask him what songs he’ll dally, he only says ‘Chuck Berry songs,’ ” Kirke said by earphone from Buenos Aires, Argentina, last workweek. “And they’re whole in difficult keys, excessively.”
For Kirke, the Berry know began many days ago at the airdrome in Zurich, Switzerland.
“Honk dialogue around himself in the third soul, which is disconcerting,” Kirke said. “The booster went to great nisus to find him a vintage Cadillac, but Berry said, ‘Chuck don’t want no darn Cadillac. Purge wants a Mercedes.’ ”
After their first-class honours degree sung onstage, Charles Edward Berry blew the lot a kiss.
“So far when I missed a discriminative stimulus,” Kirke said, “he berated me in presence of the crowd, (locution) ‘When Toss newmarket, you completely stoppage.’ Just the fundament line was he was incredible. I wouldn’t take missed it for the world.”
Toss Leavell, Wheeling Stones piano player for 25 days, played with Berry in the 1987 motion picture “Herald! Hail! Rock 'n' roll ’n’ Roll.” In it, the cantankerous Berry criticizes Keith Richards’ guitar playing and crosses up his all-star funding band at his possess hometown tribute concert.
“Right later on the picture show finished, I played with Pat in Fresh York,” Leavell recalled of a Charles Edward Berry gig with a crack band that included Dave Edmunds, The Who’s John Entwistle and Dire Straits’ Dame Alice Ellen Terry Hank Williams. In time Berry treated them like just another pickup truck band, refusing to assure them what songs he’d play.
“We did have a great time onstage, and Pat was smiling,” said Leavell. “Simply then he gave Dame Ellen Terry a slit-throat symbol as if to say, ‘I don’t care how much merriment we’re having, I’m not sledding to go over my contracted prison term by one second.’ ”
Berry’s guitar work can stillness dazzle, even if he sometimes plays come out of tune. 1 player, requesting namelessness, mentioned that he secretly tuned Berry’s guitar in front sledding onstage.
